Maintenance Tips Before Needing An Air Conditioning Service

By Kathleen Long

Maintaining air conditioning units regularly will give you benefits of lower energy bills and cooler summer days at home. They would run more efficiently and use less energy that means less money is spent when using them. You could also avoid having them suddenly break down and it will last longer as well.

Some of these maintenance works for these units could be done yourself though other things require someone with proper training and a license. Air conditioning service companies are there at Monmouth County, New Jersey when you do not feel confident in doing these yourself. The following are several tasks you can do before their expertise are needed.

Replace monthly the filters during winter and summer, which are seasons these units are frequently used, and only one during spring and fall. If your filter is a reusable one then you could just clean them instead. They will be full of dust, allergen and dirt particles that decreases airflow and could spread them causing allergic and asthma reactions.

Always turn the power off the unit before you work on them in avoiding electrocution when you their maintenance. Check their components and wiring through removing its access panel and looking for signs that they overheated. Inspect the connection of the wires if they are still tight and replace their contactor switch when you observe excessive pitting.

Check if your thermostat is working properly and is keeping the right temperature in your home and upgrading to a programmable one is advisable if yours is still mechanical. This way you can set the temperature higher when no one is home and lower it minutes before people arrive. This would let you arrive in a cooler and relaxing room.

Inspect the outside condenser units and their fans mounted on top to make sure its condition still is good. Replace their fan blades when one or even more of them are having chips or cracks that are visible. Regularly oil fan motor bearings if you have older units so they would still properly function despite their age.

After some time, grass clippings, dirt, leaves and other debris would build up outside your AC unit which decrease airflow and system capacity. Wash out debris gently by using garden hose after you shut the power off and start at the top. Trim the plants and shrubs surrounding your units to prevent airflow from being impeded.

Have a regular schedule for professional maintenance even if all things mentioned here have been done by you because some issues can be detected by professionals only. You might have a discount on their service fee because some works are already done by you. Search for reputable companies with staffs which are professionally licensed, trained properly and have enough experience.

Request for recommendations from the people you know and do some more research of them. Include their experiences and the documents which certifies that their business is legal. Their workers must be covered by an insurance policy so you would not become liable to any injury when working at your house.
