For many years now it has been common for random drugs and alcohol tests to be carried out at work. A controversial topic, it is however not as evasive as in the past. Simply put, the advantages of workplace drug testing far outweigh the disadvantages. In this article we are going to concentrate on why you should implement tests in your company.

As the boss of a company, you want to know about the habits of the people you employ. It is not being nosy. It is not violating their privacy to assure yourself that they are not on drugs. If your staff drive company vehicles or operate machinery, it is a must to ensure safety at all times. There are many advantages of random tests on your workforce.

First and foremost, it promotes a healthier and safer working environment. Your health and safety will always be at risk if you don't carry out testing. You may suspect that an employee is using, but you won't have the concrete evidence that you need. Team members who take drugs are putting your company at risk, and need to be stopped. Operating machinery, driving vehicles, and handling chemicals are three areas you really need to be very careful with. If your staff members are under the influence of alcohol or drugs more accidents will happen.

Accidents that cause death are the worst case scenario. The negative exposure to your company will be something that you will never be able to turn around. You would be branded as a company that has a lax drugs policy, and this type of exposure is something that you must avoid. When accidents happen and the cause is deemed to be through failure to keep a safe environment once again this can have a really bad affect on you and your company. As an employer you will face legal liability, and if the person involved was under the influence, you have a tricky and rough road ahead.

When you carry out tests for drugs, accidents at work will be reduced. People won't come to work under the influence of drink or drugs. When you are strict about your policies, you will help those with a problem. Say a long standing employee fails a test. Instead of firing them on the spot you can offer counseling to help them get clean.

It is very important to offer rehabilitation to those who have problems, and by carrying out tests you are helping these people. The sooner their problem is discovered the easier it will be for them to get clean and stay clean.

So let us look at how the tests are carried out. They don't necessarily require blood testing. Saliva and urine can be used. But be aware that people can try and trick results by bringing the urine of someone else to work.

When you have a drug test program in place a work, your employees will be more productive. Moral will increase, and bad behavior low. Theft will most definitely be reduced, and so will your health insurance costs. What more reasons do you really need to implement a program today.

There are no known negatives to introducing a program in the workplace for your employees. Testing is not invading the privacy of anyone. It is ensuring a healthy safe and happy work environment for all concerned.
