Why The Pecan Season Georgia Growers Work Hard To Make Successful Is Important

The State of Georgia may be best known for its peaches, its friendly residents, its busy airport, and the terrible traffic in downtown Atlanta, but not everyone knows that Georgia produces more pecans than anywhere else in the United States. Albany is in the southwest section of the state and is at the center of this vital industry. You will find pecans available all year long, but they are generally harvested from October through November. Because they are so important to the economy, pecan season Georgia growers work toward every year is eagerly anticipated.

Orchard production can be a risky business, and it is not cheap to establish a successful one. The temperature has to be favorable and the soil has to be of the right consistency for trees to grow properly. The flatter the land they are planted on, the easier it is to grow and harvest them. Most people would not think about this when they see a pecan orchard, but these trees have been planted in a deliberate design to promote pollination. They bear fruit at a young age, but growers have a ten or twelve year investment before they see any return.

Many people never see pecans in their shells. They have only purchased them halved or crushed in pre-packaged containers. If you are going to buy them fresh at a market though, you should know what to look for. The shells should be brown and smooth, and you should pick the fattest ones. If it doesn't look very healthy, it is probably not.

Nuts are fruit, and they can become rancid fairly quickly unless they are stored correctly. They need to be in airtight cans or containers and will last about six months in the refrigerator. Be careful not to place them next to garlic cloves or onions, because they will take on their odor.

Pecans, like other nuts, are good for you. They have lots of protein and fiber and are an excellent choice for people with high cholesterol. Nuts tend to have plenty of calories though, so you should take that into consideration when you are eating them. Pecans are great eaten raw or roasted. They can be added to vegetables, salads, desserts, and used as ingredients in sauces and dressings.

If you are lucky enough to have a pecan tree or two in your backyard, you can create quick and inexpensive gift baskets or tins from the nuts just laying on the ground. They can also be part of a larger present of fruits, candies, and other varieties of nuts. Pecan pies make excellent gifts for neighbors, teachers and co-workers.

Adding some information about the history of these nuts is a fun idea. You can print out a simple note letting the recipient know they have received a gift that has an interesting history.

Not everybody thinks about the nutritional value of pecans when they are trying to cook more naturally and organically. The fact is, these fruits are an important part of a good and balanced diet.
